Should You Quit Your Job to Pursue Your Own Business?

Many people ask themselves this very question on a daily basis. When dealing with difficult bosses, tight deadlines, and even having someone determine when you can eat lunch and go to the bathroom, many employees begin to dream of a day when they can call the shots, and even the breaks and lunches, for that matter.

We begin to tally up the years of work we have completed, and begin to see that nothing really changes. Well, the people and faces change, but the monotony of work stays the same. I think deep within all of us there is a desire for adventure and excitement. This desire manifests itself in many different ways. For some, it’s in material possessions. For others, it’s nice vacations. And for some, it’s dreaming of the day you can tell your boss to take this job and …well you know the rest.

So, is it wise to quit your job in order to start your own business? In my experience, if you seek wisdom only, then it may be wise. If you seek a successful business, then it is not.

You need to be able to sustain yourself while you are starting a business. Studies have shown that most businesses do not even make money within the first 2-5 years. So, you really want to think long term when determining your financial and business goals.

At one point in my life, I quit my job. I had a pretty awesome job, but I was bored and felt like my life was stagnant and desired an adventure. I got one! I also got wisdom. I also got credit card debt. I also got a new job which didn’t pay as much as the last one. The point of my story is, if you are looking for a financial security net, you should not quit your job to pursue the business. You should continue working and put in the extra time to build your business to a place where you can walk away from your job with no regrets. Will that be hard? Yes. Will that be worth it? Absolutely!

What are your thoughts on this? I would be interested to hear from entrepreneurs who have experienced both sides of this question.
