There is a story about a student of Socrates that goes something like this:
Socrates had a student who asked him, “How can I get wisdom?” Socrates walked him down to the ocean until they were both standing waist-high in the water. Then he grabbed the student's head and pushed it underwater, holding it there while the student struggled and panicked. When he let go and the student stood up, gasping for air, Socrates said, “When you want wisdom as much as you wanted that next breath, you'll get it.”
This is exactly how financial freedom works. When you want it bad enough, you will get it. Many times, I have come to realize that pain pushes a person to action. I have learned this in my job as a financial counselor and in my own life. When you are in pain, you seek deliverance from that pain or what caused it. When you are not in pain, you are happy with the status quo of life going along placidly until you are slammed into a wall that knocks you to your feet and leaves you with little blue birds circling you head. You began thinking about what happened and how everything led up to that point. In the same way Socrates' student seeks breath, you must seek financial freedom. Please don’t wait until you are gasping for air. Start today and do whatever it takes to clear your debt. I would rather swim in turbulent waters than drown in complacency. How about you?
